Chinese outdoor brand Beijing Toread may have been the beneficiary of talk across the country of President Xi Jinping’s passion for hiking.

Toread’s share-price rose sharply in mid-January at a time when there was intense commentary on social and mainstream media about the president’s enthusiasm for the outdoors in general, rather for any particular outdoor brand.

In 2002, when he was head of the provincial government in Fujian province, President Xi is reported to have been a keen hiker in the local hills, so much so that he agreed to be the honorary president of a local hiking club.
