Textile testing and research centre the Hohenstein Institute has said apparel companies have resonded well to the idea of applying to clothes ‘skin-friendly’ labels it has developed to show that products have been independently tested for substances that can cause irritation or trigger allergies.

High-end women’s outerwear and knitwear brand Rabe Moden, for example, has opted to have large parts of its range checked by the experts at the Hohenstein Institute for skin-friendliness and wants to have the labels to show for it.

In recent comments, the managing director of Rabe Moden, Jo¨rg Weber, said: “The label has a great deal of credibility because it is issued by a recognised independent test institute. By using it, we are sending out a clear signal that sets us apart from our competitors.”

Skin-compatibility tests take what the Hohenstein Institute has called an effect-based approach. It checks whether any individual substances or combinations of substances that could be released from the textile material could cause negative skin reactions.
