BASF hammers home sustainability message at textile event in Hong Kong

Chemical company BASF has announced a series of initiatives that it says will help “drive sustainability down the textile value chain”. It invited “key stakeholders” from the global textile industry value chain to a meeting in Hong Kong on February 25 to present sustainable solutions and discuss trends and concerns related to sustainability. Those invited included retailers, brands and industry partners.

At the event, BASF shared its own sustainability roadmap for the textile industry, including new technologies that “embrace safety and ecology”, it said afterwards.

“We remain committed to consumer safety, resource saving and environment protection, which will contribute to safer textiles and a better future through innovation, with sustainability as a critical driver,” said James Carnahan, senior global marketing manager for BASF textile chemicals, after the Hong Kong meeting.

New solutions from the company include innovations in finishing, such as a ‘zero add-on’ formaldehyde non-iron finish with Fixapret Resin WFF. BASF claims it’s the first solution in the industry to offer a “high wrinkle-free effect with zero add-on formaldehyde, while maintaining optimal fibre strength”.

There is also a new low-temperature bleaching system called Prestogen Activator LTB, which consumes less energy, saves costs and has a lower environmental impact than standard bleaching systems, BASF has said.

Another innovation is the EcoSafe Helizarin printing system, which the company claims will offer “the safest standard for textiles in delicate and sensitive applications” such as children’s clothes. It is a pigment printing process that also saves water and energy compared to reactive printing, while minimising the impact on the environment.
