Oeko-Tex slashes PFOA limits
New test criteria and limit values for Oeko-Tex Standard 100 came into force on April 1, following a three-month transition period.

On confirming the new criteria, Oeko-Tex pointed out that specifications for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have now become much stricter. There are new figures for each of the four product categories that Oeko-Tex uses for textiles and clothing.

For Product Class I, textiles for babies and children up to the age of three, PFOA is now restricted to 0.05 mg/kg (half of the previous limit).

In Product class II, textiles that are likely to have a large part of their surface in direct contact with the skin, and Product Class III, which includes jackets, coats and facing materials, the new limit is 0.10 mg/kg, a reduction of 60%.

For the fourth product category, which covers decorative materials, the limits are substantially higher at 0.50 mg/kg, but even this represents a 50% reduction compared to what was previously allowed.
