German firms promote advances in laser-welded textiles
New absorber systems for laser welding textiles have been launched by German research firms, which say the technique is a promising new technology for bonding textiles
The Hohenstein Institute and the Leibnitz Institute for Interactive Materials say the infrared absorbers that were commercially available until now caused discolouring around the seams on light-coloured materials.
The new absorbers produce a high-quality bond which is resistant to liquids, mechanically strong, flexible and free of discoloration.
Seams created by laser welding are also flat, stretchy, flexible and have a high tensile strength, say the companies, making them suitable for protective clothing and outdoor equipment.
