Pakistan may reopen closed textile factories as demand increases

17/07/2014
The government of Pakistan has said it wants to increase its textile exports and increase the number of textile jobs in the country in the face of strong demand.

To help it increase its textile export revenues by around $1 billion in the new financial year and to create 100,000 extra jobs, the government has asked for a list of textile factories across Pakistan that have fallen into disuse and for details of the number of workers each facility used to employ.

With this information, according to government sources, the authories will formulate a reactivation plan to bring closed-down factories’ production capacity back on stream.

The financial year in Pakistan runs from July to June. Figures for the first 11 months of last financial year show that exports of textiles and finished garments rose year on year by almost 6% to reach $12.6 billion.
