France sells more hiking shoes than Germany

Recent analysis of the European sports and outdoor market shows that France leads the way in hiking. Quoting figures prepared by specialist market research company NDP Group, commentators in France have latched onto impressive numbers for sales of hiking shoes.

In 2013, French consumers bought 4.7 million pairs of specialist footwear for hiking, 17.5% more even than Germany, even though Germany’s population is 20% bigger. This indicates that France has a strong tradition of outdoor activity, with hiking particularly popular.

The country has an extensive network of well maintained paths and trails, sponsored in many cases by energy company Gaz de France. Local tourist offices and the national ministry for sport also play an important part in promoting the activity.
