Major Spanish textile firm goes into liquidation

08/08/2014
The authorities in Spain have confirmed that one of the country’s last remaining major textile manufacturers has gone into liquidation. The company concerned, Artextil, was founded in 1931.

Artextil, based in Sabadell, near Barcelona, once employed 400 people. Josep García-Planas Cladellas, its founder, is fondly remembered there, principally for his commitment to social responsibility. For example, he followed the example of industrialists in other countries by building homes for his workers, incorporating a park, a church and a school into the plan.

The company had been in administration since 2012 and, because attempts to find a solution for creditors while continuing as a going concern have failed, the company will now be liquidated.
