Seed money takes Italian “orange” textile entrepreneurs north
Orange Fiber, a start-up launched two years ago by Sicilian entrepreneurs Adriana Santanocito and Enrica Arena, is to set up its headquarters in Trento, at the opposite end of Italy, thanks to seed money from the local authorities there and from a European regional development fund.

Ms Santanocito and Ms Arena developed the idea of using waste from the citrus fruit industry to make sustainable fabric while they were students together in Milan. Their products are functional textiles obtained from waste from oranges and other citrus fruit. Their fabric releases vitamins onto the wearer’s skin.

The two young women have patented the innovation and are now working to bring Orange Fiber to market.

In Italy alone, they have calculated that the process of making juice and other products from citrus fruit creates more than 700,000 tonnes of waste each year.
