Market research firm Euromonitor has published details of the per capita spend on sports clothing in the biggest economies in Latin America.

Chile came top of the table, with consumers there spending an average of $72.80 on sports clothing in 2013. This compared to Argentina with $65.90 and Brazil with $55.10.

In Mexico, people spent an average of $38.30 on sports clothing in 2013, followed by Venezuela with $31.20.

Colombia was a distant sixth with an average spend of $17.10.

Commentators have suggested that Chile’s relatively lax policy on import duties and the growing popularity of visiting shopping malls as a leisure activity there are among the factors that explain its position as Latin America’s biggest per capita spender.
