A meeting with Uniqlo chairman, Tadashi Yanai, was on the agenda for a state visit to Japan by India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, at the end of August and start of September.

The Japanese clothing brand expressed interest in investing in the Indian textile industry during a discussion with Mr Modi in June.

Uniqlo has plans to set up hundreds of own-brand retail stores in India and also to outsource production of some of its garments to large textile operators in India.
