Parx Plastics announces mass production

Dutch-Italian start-up Parx Plastics, a specialist in antibacterial plastic technology, has said it is now in a position to begin mass-production of the first of its biocompatible, non-toxic and non-leaching antimicrobial products, under the name Sanipolymers.

Earlier this year, Parx Plastics was identified by the European Commission as one of the top tech start-ups in Europe with its technology derived from biomimetics to create antimicrobial plastics.

The company has said its technology can be applied to more or less any synthetic fibre, and has described sports and outdoor clothing as an interesting field of application.

“The technology developed by Parx Plastics is the world’s first antimicrobial solution for plastic without toxins or chemicals,” the company said upon making the new announcement in mid-September. “It makes use of an essential trace element that is present in food and necessary in our daily diet for a healthy immune system and for building up hair, nails and skin.
Absolute safety is guaranteed not only by the biocompatibility but also because the technology does not leach out.”

It said tests at TU¨V have shown its Sanipolymers products can kill up to 99% of bacteria, including Staphylococcus Aurus and E.Coli, within 24 hours “by means of a mere physical and mechanical action”. It also named US company Eastman as one of the first manufacturers to use Sanipolymers, in this case in its Tritan co-polymers.
