US report criticises Uzbekistan’s cotton industry over child labour

Uzbekistan, the fifth biggest producer of cotton in the world, has come in for criticism from the US government in recent days because of allegations that children are still involved in harvesting the fibre.

An official ban on the use of child labour has been in place since 2008, but a recent report compiled by the US Department of Labour said children were being made to work at the cotton harvest in some regions because growers are under pressure to meet government quotas.
