DyStar clarifies sustainability performance

Textile chemical supplier DyStar has given sportstextiles some extra information about its performance in sustainability. Its most recent Sustainability Report, covering operations in 2013, said the company had managed to reduce “emissions intensity” of greenhouse gases in dyestuff and chemical manufacture in 2013.

It has now clarified that this means greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of production fell. “This shows an improvement in our processes,” the company told sportstextiles, “but due to increased production, our total absolute emissions are higher.”

The company’s sustainability goals centre on achieving a 20% reduction by 2020 of operational impact in four key areas: energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and waste generation. This means a 20% reduction compared to the base-year figures, which are for 2010, when the project began.

So far, compared to 2010, DyStar has achieved a 4% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 15% reduction in energy use and a 21% reduction in water use. But its waste generation has gone up. Compared to 2010, the company is now generating 16% more waste.
