BASF says SLIPS agreement will lead to “exciting” new TPUs

BASF has taken part in a $3 million investment exercise in Massachusetts-based smart materials developer SLIPS Technologies. Swiss entrepreneur and private investor Hansjo¨rg Wyss has also participated in the financing.

SLIPS Technologies develops customised, highly-repellent slippery surfaces for a large variety of applications. Its materials are biomimetic, taking their main inspiration from insect-consuming tropical pitcher plants, which produce fluid containing viscoelastic biopolymers that prevent prey from escaping.

Alongside the investment, BASF has signed a joint development agreement with the Cambridge-based company to develop SLIPS-coated thermoplastics with primary focus on thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs). “By collaborating with SLIPS Technologies, we will develop and commercialise TPUs with new and exciting properties,” said Steve Fischer, director of new markets and products, for the performance materials division of BASF.
