Bangladesh: government asks textile producers to double output

06/11/2014
The government in Dhaka has said in a new policy document that it wants textile mills in Bangladesh to double the amount of fabric they produce by 2020.

Industry associations estimate that the 740 textile mills in operation at the moment produce a collective total of 7 billion metres of fabric at the moment. The government policy document says this should increase to 14 billion by the end of the decade.

According to the document, demand is there because garment manufacturers in Bangladesh are unable to meet all of their fabric needs from domestic suppliers at the moment.

Industry leaders said immediately that energy provision will need to improve across the country if mills are to meet the target.
