Overseas yarns and fibres allowed with new Japanese quality label

Japan’s government has announced plans to introduce a new quality label for garments in a bid to encourage consumers to increase their purchases of domestically made apparel from current levels of around 3% of the total.

Recent comments from the ministry of economy, trade and industry in Tokyo suggest finished garments bearing a new ‘J Quality’ label may reach the shops this autumn.

For any garment to qualify for the new label, weaving, dyeing and sewing of it must take place in Japan. However, raw materials, including yarns and fibres, can be brought in from overseas.
