Campaign group accuses Nike and Li Ning of “greenwashing”

The urgency to tackle water pollution is gaining momentum in countries such as China, Greenpeace said on making the new announcement, where almost half of the surface water is not drinkable and 64% of underground drinking water reserves in major cities are “seriously polluted”. The organisation further claims that China’s textile industry is responsible for 10% of the country’s industrial wastewater emission.
A campaign called Detox, which Greenpeace launched four years ago, demands that clothing and footwear brands commit to zero discharge of all hazardous chemicals by 2020 and require their suppliers to disclose the releases of toxic chemicals from their facilities. Greenpeace has produced a table, ranking the performance of 18 major clothing and footwear companies, including Nike and Li Ning, that have already made a commitment to the campaign.
