US government announces $150m funding for textile research

23/03/2015
The US government has announced $150 million in public-private investment to develop new technologies through a new Textiles-Focused Manufacturing Innovation Institute.

Manufacturers, universities and non-profits will form the new hub, which will focus on technical textiles such as flame resistant fabrics for workwear, as well as number of other applications.

The $75 million federal investment will be matched by $75 million of private sector resources. It will also help “sharpen the capabilities” of small manufacturers through partnership competitions in 12 states.

The first institute awarded is in Youngstown, Ohio. Only in its third year, it is advancing research that will help accelerate the speed of 3D printing in metals by a factor of 10.

Around 877,000 manufacturing jobs have been created in the US since 2010, although in the preceding 10 years, manufacturing jobs fall by 40%.
