India’s government has said it would like of its north-eastern states to set up dedicated apparel and garment manufacturing centres and the most north-easterly of all, Arunachal Pradesh, is leading the way.

In late March, senior government representatives presided over a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for a textile manufacturing centre in the town of Pasighat.

The government’s idea is to build the facilities and for local producers then to move in and start production in a plug-and-play environment.

It has set aside a budget of more than $150 million over the next five years for the initiative.
