Fair Wear Foundation makes Rana Plaza anniversary plea

Fair Wear Foundation (FWF), an Amsterdam-based non-profit organisation that works with companies and factories to improve labour conditions for garment workers, has launched a new appeal for clothing brands and retailers sourcing from Bangladesh to make a donation to a special trust fund established to help victims of the disaster at Rana Plaza two years ago and their families.

FWF launched the appeal in the build-up to April 24, the second anniversary of the collapse of a factory building at Rana Plaza, near Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. More than 1,100 people died and more than 2,500 were injured.

In a statement, FWF said: “It is calculated that at least $30 million is needed to compensate the over 5,000 individuals with eligible claims. So far $21.5 million has been paid into the Rana Plaza Donors Trust Fund.”

The International Labour Organisation set up the fund in January 2014.
