Livia Firth rails against fast fashion

In an interview she gave to specialist media for Earth Day on April 22, Ms Firth said the phenomenon had changed the whole world of fashion over the last two decades, and she added: “Now we have a situation where, as consumers, we are caught in an absurd circle of micro-trends, with two mini-seasons a week in stores. In reality, this evil machine is exploiting everyone and everything: the consumer, the planet’s resources and the people who produce them.”
She gave figures stating that each year across the world, 1.5 billion garments are sewn by an estimated 40 million people, working in 250,000 factories, predominantly in low-cost economies, in a garment and textile industry worth around $3 trillion per year.
“The bulk of that goes into the pockets of the owners of those fast fashion brands,” Ms Firth continued. “It’s a complicated mess we are in.”
