Fatalities in Philippines factory fire

At least 54 workers at a footwear factory in the Valenzuela district of Manila have lost their lives after fire destroyed the facility on May 14. The factory was run by local firm, the Kentex Manufacturing Corporation, which makes sandals, beach shoes and slippers for the local market.

In a statement, the labour secretary of the Philippines government, Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, said an undetermined number of Kentex workers were still missing and that it would only be possible for search teams to begin an effort to find people when firefighters gave the go-ahead. She said a welding operation on the factory’s main gate was thought to have started the fire.

Ms Dimapilis-Baldoz said the company had passed a health and safety inspection in September 2014.
