European delegation meets APTMA

A delegation from the European Union (EU) visited Pakistan in mid-May to examine how the trading advantages conferred by Pakistan’s status as qualifying for generalised system of preferences (GSP)-plus programme since January 2014 have helped the Asian country.

Exporters in GSP-plus countries have preferential access to the EU market; the EU granted this status to 10 trading partners at the start of 2014, characerising them as “vulnerable developing countries”.

During the visit to Pakistan, Marc Vanheukelen, director of sustainable development and economic partnerships in the European Commission’s trade directorate, held talks with the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA). He learned that Pakistan textile and apparel exports to the EU increased by 24% in volume and 30% in value between January 2014 and December of the same year.
