This investment is part of a wider strategy to promote the Solvay Fibras global business unit, through increased productivity and competitiveness of its activities, while reinforcing development of sustainable innovations in yarns and fibres, the group said.
“Innovation is a key axis for our growth and the development of the textile sector,” said the business unit’s incoming chief executive, Renato Boaventura, on making the announcement. “While consumers previously wanted quality and comfort, they now want textiles that combine these characteristics with features that can boost wellbeing and performance, and that are aligned with sustainability. These benefits can only be offered by smart textile fibres.”
To illustrate the point, he said that 20% of Solvay Fibras’s revenue today comes from products it has launched in the last five years, including Emana (a yarn that reduces the signs of cellulite and slows muscle fatigue) and Amni Soul Eco, a biodegradable polyamide yarn. He also said the business unit intends to increase the contribution of new products to 40% of turnover by 2018.
