Indian yoga brand shuns polyester

A start-up Indian yogawear brand launched a new range on the world’s first International Yoga Day on June 21.

The Bangalore-based company, IKA Yoga Wear, said it had consulted extensively for two years with yoga teachers and textile engineers before launch. Co-founder, Malika Baruah, said one of the most important findings from this exercise is that more than 90% of the market consists of polyester and nylon products that are essentially plastic and are “not at all conducive to the practice of yoga”.

IKA’s collection uses a proprietary fabric, blending cotton and Modal, that it calls Hyperbreath, to provide what it calls “the airiness and comfort that serious yoga practice deserves”.
