Scottish technical textile manufacturer J&D Wilkie has announced plans to expand its production set-up in China. Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, announced the expansion plans during a trade visit to China at the end of July.

Based near Dundee, J&D Wilkie began production in 1868 and was part of the city’s flourishing jute industry. Now it makes a wide range of technical textile products, including protective fabrics for the personal protective equipment market.

It opened a wholly owned manufacturing facility in China eight years ago and will now invest £3 million in expanding the facility, which is in Jiaxing, south of Shanghai. The company said its expansion move in China would safeguard 90 jobs in Scotland.
