Schwalbe to launch new inner tube following work with BASF

01/09/2015
Specialist mountain bike inner tube and tyre manufacturer Schwalbe has worked with BASF Performance Materials to develop a new thermoplastic material, based on the chemical company’s thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) Elastollan.

The partners found that the mechanical properties of Elastollan mean that the wall thickness of inner tubes could be considerably reduced, leading to a reduction in weight of as much as 65% compared to a standard tube. Depending on the size of the tyre, new tubes, which Schwalbe will market under the name Evo Tube, will weigh between 68 and 76 grammes.

According to Schwalbe, the tube will be in stores from December 2015.

Inner tubes made from Elastollan can withstand a very high level of continuous load, the companies said on making the announcement, and, despite a reduced wall thickness, can maintain a constant air pressure over long periods.
