Radical Russian apparel proposal unlikely to win support

Industry commentators have said it is unlikely the government in Russia will pay much attention to a call from the president of the country’s textile industry association, Shakmal Ildarov, to ban apparel imports.

Mr Ildarov’s association made a similar request in 2014 but failed to win government support. Commentators say a similar outcome is likely this time.

The proposals from Mr Ildarov this time go as far as to make apparel already imported from the EU, the US and other markets illegal, to seize products from stores and destroy them. He said in recent comments that importing finished apparel from overseas had reduced the Russian textile industry’s contribution to national gross domestic product from 12% at the start of this century to only 4% now.
