China currently has 230,000 textile and apparel companies. Hu Kehua, deputy director of the Office for Social Responsibility at the China National Textile and Apparel Council, revealed the figures at the Planet Textiles conference in Shanghai on October 14, although he pointed out that “only” 38,000 of these are large-scale manufacturers.

Mr Hu told the conference the textile industry had a total output of $1 trillion in 2014 and represents 10% of China’s entire gross domestic product. Around 60% of the global total of fibre processing takes place in China and the industry there currently employs more than 20 million people.

“The textiles industry has always been an important industry for helping people make their livelihood,” Mr Hu said.
