Athletic shoe market still growing in France, NPD Group says

New figures from specialist market research organisation NPD Group suggest sales of sports shoes in France will register growth of between 5% and 10% for 2015, which it describes as “remarkable” given that the same market grew by 8% in 2014. Sports footwear now constitutes a market worth €2.7 billion per year, with a 30% share of all footwear sold in France, it said.

However, NPD Group has also said that 44% of all sports or sports-inspired shoes sold in France now are never used for sports or outdoor activity. Renaud Vaschalde, a sports markets expert for NPD Group in Europe, said on releasing the new figures for France: “The growth we have seen goes across the who sports shoe market, but it’s clear that shoes that we might call ‘sports style’ or ‘sports fashion’, which is to say leisure shoes inspired by sport, deserve special attention here. The fashion effect is very real; this category represents 55% of sports shoe sales today.”

Of the sports shoes that are for sports, NPD Group said the running category has continued to perform well and now accounts for 20% of the market. Women’s running shoes in particular have experienced 40% growth in the last year and there are now an estimated 8 million running enthusiasts in France.
