Impressive growth for Myanmar garment industry

04/12/2015
The value of garment exports from Myanmar increased by almost 100% between 2012 and 2014, the Asian country’s Garment Manufacturers’ Association has said.

In 2012, apparel exports from Myanmar had a value of $900 million. By 2014, the figure had almost doubled, reaching $1.7 billion. Industry commentators have speculated that if the general election that took place in Myanmar in November leads to a peaceful transition to a new form of government, the garment industry there could experience even more impressive growth, thanks to lower labour costs than many other countries in the region and favourable access to important export markets.
