Hope for hemp, designer says

UK-based clothing designer Emma Parkinson has said she hopes production of industrial hemp might become more widespread there following recent changes to legislation in the US.

It is currently legal to grow industrial hemp in Colorado, Oregon and Vermont and six other states in the US are preparing to follow suit. Emma Parkinson, who recently launched Poco Rosso, a range of children’s clothing made from hemp and organic cotton, has said she believes cultivating the fibre more widely in other countries may become possible as a result.

She said hemp is a sustainable fibre to grow because it requires no pesticides or chemicals, produces large volumes of biomass that can be converted into fuel, is biodegradable and non-toxic and can produce fabric that is soft but with high levels of durability and tensile strength.

Hemp clothes are highly breathable because of the porous nature of its fibres, stay cooler in warm weather and retain in cool weather and naturally stop up to 95% of the sun’s UV light, she said.
