Eight new snowsports helmets will have MIPS protection technology

MIPS chief executive, Johan Thiel, has described the new range of helmets as “more diverse than ever” but that, no matter the age of the skier or snowboarder wearing one of the helmets, his company’s system will improve head protection and increase “brain safety awareness in the snowsports industry”.
The patented technology reduces rotational forces on the brain, MIPS says. Helmets are designed to absorb direct impacts but when combined with MIPS, they can absorb oblique forces of certain impacts by allowing a small rotation of the outer shell relative to the liner. This technology mimics the function of cerebral spinal fluid in the human head and adds a second layer of safety that can reduce damage to the brain during impact.
