Vestis restructuring spells the end for Sports Chalet

Connecticut-based Vestis Retail Group has applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Vestis is the parent company of Eastern Mountain Sports, Bob’s Stores, and Sport Chalet.

It intends to close all 47 Sport Chalet stores, eight Eastern Mountain Sports stores, and one Bob’s outlet and has begun an exercise to sell off stock at these shops, which it will conclude by June 30.

It said its aim in entering into voluntary bankruptcy protection is to establish “a stronger financial foundation” for the company. “These steps focus on supporting the long-term success of Eastern Mountain Sports and Bob’s, while efficiently winding down Sport Chalet,” it added.

Eastern Mountain Sports sells a wide range of own-brand and branded outdoor apparel, footwear and accessories. It has around 60 stores in the north-eastern region of the United States, stretching from Vermont to Washington DC.

Bob’s Stores offers apparel and footwear for sports, activewear and workwear. It also carries a range of teamwear for American football, ice hockey and basketball teams. It, too, has its base in the north-east of the US where it has a network of 35 stores.

In contrast, Sports Chalet’s 47 stores were in California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.
