European manmade fibres producers demand level playing field

The European Manmade Fibres Association (CIRFS) held its sixty-sixth annual general meeting (AGM) in Brussels at the end of May.

At the event, the organisation’s president, Heinz Meierkord, said the industry in Europe was continuing to develop and grow despite a “great number of global challenges”. Among these, he mentioned “large over-capacities in China” and a difficult global economic context. He said that the manmade fibre sector remains strong thanks to its ability to specialise, to innovate and to reinvent itself.

“However,” he said, “trade distortions are on the rise and the weight of European legislation is becoming heavier, in particular on the environment and energy.” He said European producers need a level playing field to be able to “compete on fair terms with the rest of the world”.
