Charitable organisation Business in the Community (BITC) has included a cotton producers’ co-operative in Côte d’Ivoire in the list of finalists for its 2016 awards.

SECO (Société d’Exploitation Cotonnière) gives farmers training in methods for increasing their yields, addressing low literacy rates and health issues in farming communities, and improving transport and storage. SECO is a subsidiary of Singaporean industrial group OLAM.

Other initiatives include a travelling ‘health caravan’ and HIV awareness programme, 15 literacy centres, a programme to distribute better varieties of seeds, subsidised fertilisers and pesticides and accessible finance options including 0% microfinance.

In 2009, the average net annual revenue for farmers involved with SECO was $200. By 2015, the figure had risen to $1,200.
