The research forms part of the Bioakod project, which is funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR). The NCBiR supports innovative projects using funds from the European Union.
The project partners say that the material features microspheres containing active herbal extracts, which aid the treatment of dermatological diseases. This has allowed them to create garments that can be personalised to the needs of each patient, including the nature of the disease affecting them and their body shape.
“The developed bioactive clothing will have a major impact on improving the quality of life of its users by enabling them to carry out treatment therapies that are often cumbersome, and by ensuring their well-being and safety,” the consortium said.
The developers believe the textiles could also be used to produce clothing for the handicapped or elderly.
