Rwanda to boost silk production with help of South Korean company

Rwanda’s National Agricultural Exports Development Board is targeting an increase in the country’s silk production following an agreement with South Korean company Heworks Rwanda silk, according to local media reports.

The agreement will see the boosting of Hework’s production of raw silk, silk yarn and other silk products. The South Korean company has also agreed to purchase all of the silk cocoons produced by cooperatives and farmers in Rwanda. It will invest an initial $5.2 million in the project.

Hework also plans to establish a training facility for local farmers, to teach them how to handle the silkworm eggs needed for cocoon production.

The Rwandan government will build a specialist silk factory in the Kigali Special Economic Zone, which will have reeling machines for processing cocoons into silk yarn. These will be installed by Heworks.
