EU expands Ecolabel criteria for footwear

19/08/2016
The European Commission has adopted new criteria under the EU Ecolabel scheme for a series of new sectors, including footwear.

The EU Ecolabel, also known as the EU Flower label, was established in 1992 to identify products or services that have a reduced environmental impact. It guarantees that all stages of production meet the EU’s strict environmental standards. It also covers product safety and corporate social responsibility.

The criteria relating to footwear relates specifically to final footwear assembly sites, which will need to improve the labour conditions of their workers if they wish to be awarded the EU Ecolabel.

"The EU Ecolabel promotes Europe's transition to a circular economy, supporting both sustainable production and consumption”, said Karmenu Vella, EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

“The Ecolabel rewards those manufacturers who choose to design products that are durable and repairable, promoting innovation and saving resources,” he added.
