Apparel brands sign White House Equal Pay Pledge
Sportswear manufacturer Nike and outdoor brand Patagonia were among 29 companies that recently added their signatures to the White House Equal Pay Pledge.

The pledge – formally known as the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act - was the first piece of legislation that US President Barack Obama signed into law after assuming office in 2009. It aims to narrow the pay gap between men and women in the country.

Nike and Patagonia joined companies including Apple, Visa and Facebook in signing the pledge during the first United State of Women Summit in June.

“Diversity is about acknowledging and valuing our differences and appreciating that everyone brings unique experiences, perspectives and ideas to the team,” said Nike, adding that it is committed to rewarding the performance of its employees regardless of gender.

In comments after signing the pledge, Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario (pictured) said: “Patagonia continues to value and honour our working women with equal pay and opportunity. Women and men are paid equally for comparable work.”

“We have an equal number of women and men at every level of the company, including among executive positions and the boardroom,” she added.
