Novamont prepares to open new butanediol “mini-refinery”
Italian material sciences company Novamont will open a new “mini-refinery” on September 30 dedicated to making new bioplastics using “pioneering proprietary technologies”.

Novamont uses plants as its raw material and then uses bacteria to transform sugars from the plants into butanediol for use in the production of bioplastics.

The company has said it aims to produce 30,000 tonnes of butanediol per year at its plant in Adria in the Veneto region of Italy. Its new mini-refinery will generate 150 new jobs there.

Dr Gunter Pauli, an entrepreneur, “designer of new business models” and author of The Blue Economy, was an early backer of Novamont. At the time of the butanediol announcement, he said: “The goal of (Novamont chief executive) Catia Bastioli and her team is not just producing marvels of biochemistry; her vision is to develop a local economy.”
