Nottingham student develops “new class of fabric”

A doctoral student at Nottingham Trent University, Sonia Michelle Reynolds, has come up with what she has called a new class of fabric to add to knit-and-weave materials.

Ms Reynolds has developed material she calls Zephlinear, describing it as an advancement on non-woven fabric. The fabric structure leaves spaces in which designers and garment manufacturers can “encase objects for fashion or function”. She gives copper wire and encased LEDs as examples.

The fabric has “a strong potential for use as a smart and intelligent textile”, Ms Reynolds has said.
