Functional fabrics matter more than ever

Japanese textile trends consultant, Yoku Watanabe, has said functional fabrics are playing a more and more important role in fashion.

Ms Watanabe was part of the team that put together the trends forum at the October 2016 Intertextile Shanghai exhibition, which featured fabrics from all over the world.

“We received so many functional fabrics this year,” she said. “Interesting examples include denim-looking fabrics that are highly functional, but with some of the functionality hidden. You get a denim-life fabric with waterproofness built in, for example.”

She said the “evolution of denim” never stops.
