Brands commit to sustainable clothing programme

Primark, Bobo Choses, OVS, Peak Performance and Star Sock are the first companies to sign up to the scheme since its launch in May 2016. They will support each other in the development of a strategy to reduce their impact on the environment.
ECAP is made up five prominent European organisations: WRAP-UK, MADE-BY, Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), the Danish Fashion Institute (DAFI), and the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB).
With the support of the EU’s LIFE funding initiative, it aims to divert more than 90,000 tonnes of clothing away from landfill annually in Europe by 2019. It also wants to reduce CO2 emissions and generate significant water savings. This is done by encouraging companies to design their products for a longer life and with closed-loop production in mind. It is also urging customers to buy fewer clothes and wear them for longer.
“As the first participants of ECAP, these organisations are championing sustainable clothing across Europe,” said Sarah Clayton, head of products at WRAP. “The wheels are in motion but more can be done. We are looking to welcome and involve more brands, retailers, manufacturers, reuse and recycling organisations, charities and consumers in the plan to drive greater sustainability of clothing across Europe.”
