China’s most famous mountaineer confirms climbing’s popularity
China’s most famous mountaineer, Sun Bin, has expeditions planned to climb Mount Everest in 2017, 2018 and 2020, but has revealed that his ascent of the world’s highest mountain next year will be his first for 20 years.

Sun Bin climbed Everest in 1997 and has gone on not just to complete the Seven Summits (climbing the highest mountain on each continent), but to climb most of the seven at least four times. Mount Everest is the experience he has found difficult to repeat until now.

Mr Sun told sportstextiles recently that increased interest among Chinese outdoor enthusiasts in climbing has allowed him to set up an adventure tourism company, Beyond The View and generate enough customers for China now to have groups of climbers with enough expertise and experience to take on Everest.

“Running has been very popular in China for a number of years,” he said, “with many people running every day, then training for and taking part in marathons, 100-kilometre runs and so on. And for some people, after that, the only thing they could turn to to keep pushing themselves was climbing.”
