Chemicals manufacturer BASF is to increase its capacity to make methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) at its factory in Geismar, Louisiana. MDI is an important component in the production of polyurethanes.

Capacity at the US plant will increase incrementally from 300,000 tonnes per year to around 600,000 tonnes per year.

It will use shale gas as a source of raw material.
