A survey carried out by the Footwear Retailers and Distributors of America (FDRA) trade association suggests that online purchases of athletic and performance footwear will surpass those of fashion footwear by a considerable margin in the US during the period around the Thanksgiving holiday (November 24).

FDRA’s survey found that 19.2% of online shoppers will be looking for footwear suitable for gym or outdoor sports activity and that a further 27.5% will buy casual or retro sneakers. In addition, 4.9% of respondents said they will buy winter boots or snow footwear and another 7.7% work shoes or boots.

This suggests that a total of 59.3% of purchases are likely to be of one type of performance footwear or another.

In comparison, 23.5% of respondents said they will shop online for fashion shoes or dress shoes, while a further 13.2% will look for fashion boots.
