New version of bluesign bluefinder available

Fourteen years after the release of the first online positive list for safe chemicals for the textile industry, certification body bluesign technologies has launched the latest generation of its bluesign bluefinder platform. This platform provides details of more than 7,500 bluesign-approved chemicals.

Founder, Peter Waeber, said on introducing the new list: “The year 2020 is now. You can use these bluesign-approved products for chemical change management to detox the supply chain today.”

He described the range of products listed as “comprehensive”, with “all possible combinations of colours and finishes” included.

On the topical subject of using polyfluorinated organic compounds (PFCs) to make textiles water-resistant, Mr Waeber added that the latest bluesign range includes more than 60 alternatives.

He warned that there is no short-cut to achieving “detox” in the textile supply chain, and said: “Our long experience proves that ‘bluesign light’ doesn’t work at all.” He went on to say his organisation will launch a new version of the bluesign bluetool, which enables textile manufacturers to carry out risk assessments of products.
 
The bluesign bluetool was developed in 2001 and enables everyone in the textile industry make sure products they are considering using meet consumer safety aspects and will manufacfturers reduce their impact to the environment. It flags up close to 700 banned chemical substances, more than the largest manufacturing restricted substance lists from campaign groups or brands.
