US company launches lightweight heated down jacket

US apparel developer Ravean has unveiled an ultra-light version of the heated down jacket it launched on crowdfunding site Kickstarter in 2015.

The new jacket weighs only 80 grammes, half the weight of the original product and much lighter than typical down winter jackets.

“The light weight feature is great because you can stay warm without the bulk, which makes for a perfect mid-layer that can go with any jacket you own,” said Ravean co-founder Bryce Fisher.

“We’ve also simplified our heating system compared to the original version, which makes our new jacket more affordable and practical,” he added.

The heating elements are located on the back, chest and pocket areas of the jacket, which the company says are where people most need them. It has a one-button system with settings for low, medium and high heat.

“Even though our new jackets are ultra-thin, they keep you warm at temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-15 Celsius), and then can be used in sub-zero temperatures when worn as a heated liner under a shell,” said Jonathan Bybee, co-founder of the company.

Other features of the updated jacket include a water-repellent coating, an aluminium heat-reflective lining to retain heat, and hydrophobic down to help the inside of the jacket dry faster.
